Author: Kwek Tze “K.T.” Tan (submitted March 2024)
Professor K.T. Tan completed a short-term JSPS invitational fellowship from in the Spring of 2023. His host was Professor Toshio Ogasawara at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT). Together, Tan and Ogasawara research composite materials. Prof. Tan conducted a research seminar titled “Bioinspired Structures and Materials”. He also delivered eight talks at research institutions and universities across the country. These include JAXA, ORIST, Kyoto University, Kyushu University, Nagoya University, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Tokyo University of Science, and Meiji University. Prof. Tan delivered a plenary talk at the Japan-India Composite Conference. The title of his talk was “Designing Composite Adhesive Joints using Biomimicry and Machine Learning.”
Professor Tan was effective in disseminating his research results across Japan. Moreover, he also engaged in discussion with Japanese researchers. These activities helped to advance Japan’s scientific research and internationalization efforts. During his many visits, Professor Tan also mentored young Japanese researchers and students.
Professor Tan would like to thank JSPS for the great program and financial support. The research allowance provided the opportunity to visit universities across Japan. Professor Tan met many new researchers and entered into several engaging research discussions. Professor Tan is grateful for the accommodations provided by TUAT. Professor Tan also thanks his host, Professor Ogasawara and TUAT staff and students. They made his visit not only possible, but also enjoyable. Professor Tan plans to publish with Professor Ogasawara in key research areas. Some of these include bioinspired Japanese joints, meta-material adhesive joints, edge impact of composites, and fatigue compression-after-impact (CAI) of composites.
